One time, I told a co-worker that I wanted to start a home-based online business, and he went on a massive tirade. “Starting a business isn’t worth it,” he said. “You’ll have to pay taxes that you won’t be able to afford. You’ll also need equipment that’s going to cost a lot of money. Most businesses fail within the first year. It’s not worth it.” I also teased the idea of starting a business to other people and they all went on a similar tirade.
My business is self-publishing and freelance writing. I only need about $350 for resell hosting, and a domain In addition to this, I need about $200 in online advertising. Also, business cards aren’t expensive either. Let’s say I decide to pay $50.00 for business cards. Graphic Design is not one of my biggest skills, but I’m still going to design covers for my books. If I want to purchase every single app in Creative Cloud, that may cost me about $720. In total, Mm expenses would be around $1,320 a year. I’ll admit, it will take me a very long time to save up all that money, but all good things come in time.
Every time I tell people I want to make a living as a freelance writer, blogger, and novelist, people often mock me. “So, you think you’re going to make millions of dollars.” What are you getting on with? I never said I was going to make millions of dollars! Realistically, I think I should make enough money to live comfortably. Even if that’s the case, I’ll still keep my current job, just to be on the safe side.
Are the Residents of Newfoundland and Labrador Too Negative?
I know I should ignore the naysayers, but most of them have something in common; they live in my home province of Newfoundland and Labrador. I’ve always wondered why that is.
I always thought that the people of Newfoundland and Labrador are just too negative. I just assumed that these people are miserable because they’ve never followed their dreams, so they have to discourage others from following theirs. However, I have a friend who has a different theory.
According to my friend, we were simply taught it’s safer to work for somebody else than to work for yourself. Therefore, working for ourselves isn’t worth the risk. Then again, people around the world have the same mentality.
However, these days, it doesn’t matter what you do with your life, it takes hard work, and there’s no guarantees in life. For example, you could work at a job for 10 days and your employer lets you go without warning. Meanwhile, somebody could start their own business, and it becomes a steady source of income for you for 10 years, before your company goes bankrupt.
What Would Happen If We Stopped Discouraging Others?
Just imagine would happen if we stopped discouraging each other.
• Potential entrepreneurs could start their own businesses.
• Somebody who loves writing may publish a bestseller.
• Society would be introduced to more inventions that would improve people’s lives.
Thankfully, we have innovators in Newfoundland and Labrador and around the world who choose to ignore the critics, the naysayers, the haters, whatever you want to call them.
